If, after receiving your Teacher Assessed Grades, you wish to query any of the grades awarded, the below information will advise you on the steps to take. It is important that you read this information carefully, so that you understand fully all of the steps involved in the process of querying grades.

Appeals Process – A Quick Summary

This is the process you need to follow if you wish to query a grade you have received. You must follow each step in the process. You need to read in more detail how to complete each step below, but here is a brief outline of the process:

Step 1: request your Individual Assessment Record from the school. This will tell you exactly how your individual grade was arrived at.

Step 2: if, after seeing how your grade was arrived at, you believe an administrative or procedural error was made, you can ask Woodlands School to review your grade. This is called a Centre Review.

Step 3: if, after receiving the outcome of the centre review of your grade, you wish to make a further appeal to the Awarding Organisation (i.e. exam board), Woodlands School will do this on your behalf. Woodlands School will require payment for any awarding organisation appeal before it is submitted, but will reimburse you if the appeal is upheld i.e. the grade is changed.

Step 4: if, after receiving the outcome of your appeal to the Awarding Organisation, you still wish to pursue an appeal further, you can apply for a procedural review to the Exam Procedures Review Service (EPRS). This needs to be done by the candidate themselves but feel free to contact the school for more information on how to do this.

Alternative: if you are unhappy with a grade, you can apply to re-sit the exams for any subject in the November 2021 exam series. There will be no charge for this.

What do I do if I want to query the grade I have been awarded?

A letter was sent home by Ms Jordan, Assistant Head Teacher responsible for Raising Standards, outlining Woodlands School's method for arriving at Teacher Assessed Grades. Pupils also signed two declarations confirming they understood this process. These three documents can be found here:

Please watch the video above, read through the Centre Policy and view the relevant subject's Assessment Record before deciding to query any grade, to ensure you are clear how grades were arrived at.

Step 1: how do I query my grade?

Before deciding to query your grade, it is important that you know how your individual grade was arrived at in the subject you want to query, e.g. which of your PPE exams or other evidence were used as part of the evidence to arrive at your final grade.

We will provide you with an Individual Assessment Record for any subject you require. This will include information on the range of evidence we used to arrive at your grade, any access arrangements provided or special consideration applied. This is the first step of the process.

To find out your Individual Assessment Record for any subject, please complete this online form: Step 1: Form to Request Evidence - Individual Assessment Record

Please specify the subjects you wish to receive an Individual Assessment Record for. This form must be completed by 16th August, 2021.

If, after viewing your Individual Assessment Record, you would like to appeal your grade, you can request that Woodlands School conducts a centre review of your grade. This is the second step of the process.

Step 2: How do I request a centre review?

You can request for Woodlands School to conduct a centre review by completing this form: Step 2: Centre Appeal Form 2021 (ideally, click on this link and use the Google Chrome browser).

You will be able to type onto this form directly. You must complete a form for each subject's grade that you wish to appeal. You will also need to provide evidence that Woodlands School has made an administrative or procedural error when awarding your grade, e.g. Woodlands School failed to follow its procedures properly or consistently in arriving at that result or made an administrative error in relation to the result.

Where the form asks, 'is this a priority appeal?' select, 'no,' as priority appeals are for A-Level or Level 3 qualifications only, which Woodlands School does not run.

This form needs to be completed in full and saved with the candidate's full name and the title of the subject whose grade you are appealing on the file name. To save the form, complete all of the details and then click on the downward arrow symbol in the top-right of the screen (on Google Chrome, this will look like this: ). Then select, ‘With Your Changes’. You will then be able to save the form to your computer in the normal way.

Once saved, this form needs to be sent to 2021resultsappeal@woodlandsschool.essex.sch.uk by 27th August, 2021.

What will be checked during a centre review?

You can ask the centre to check whether it made a procedural error, an administrative error, or both.

A procedural error means a failure to follow the process set out in the centre policy. An administrative error means an error in recording your grade or submitting your grade to the awarding organisation.

Step 3: How do I request an awarding organisation appeal?

If, after receiving the outcome of your centre review, you would still like to pursue a further appeal, you can request that Woodlands School makes an appeal to the awarding organisation on your behalf. This is the third step of the process.

You can request an appeal to the awarding organisation by completing this form: Step 3: Awarding Organisation Appeal Form

You will be able to type onto this form directly. You must complete a form for each subject's grade that you wish to appeal. You will also need to provide evidence that Woodlands School:

did not follow its procedure properly or consistently in arriving at the result, or during the centre review;
made an administrative error in relation to the result or
made an unreasonable exercise of academic judgement in the choice of evidence from which to determine the grade and/or the determination of that grade from the evidence

This form needs to be completed in full and saved with the candidate's full name and the title of the subject whose grade you are appealing in the file name.

To save the form, complete all of the details and then click on the downward arrow symbol in the top-right of the screen (on Google Chrome, this will look like this: ). Then select, ‘With Your Changes’. You will then be able to save the form to your computer in the normal way.

Once saved, this form needs to be sent to 2021resultsappeal@woodlandsschool.essex.sch.uk by 13th September, 2021.

Woodlands School will then submit your appeal to the relevant awarding organisation and communicate the result of the appeal to you once it has been received.

Please note: there will be a charge to enter an awarding organisation appeal. Awarding organisations have not yet informed schools how much this will cost, but Woodlands School will advise you of the cost of submitting an awarding organisation appeal after you have completed the form and sent it into the school.

Woodlands School will require payment for any awarding organisation appeal before it is submitted, but will reimburse you if the appeal is upheld i.e. the grade is changed.

What will be checked during an awarding organisation appeal?

You can ask the awarding organisation to check whether the centre made a procedural error – or whether the awarding organisation itself made an administrative error. You can also ask the awarding organisation to check whether the academic judgement of the centre was unreasonable, either in the selection of evidence or the determination of your grade.

You must request a centre review before you can request an awarding organisation appeal. This is so the awarding organisation is certain that your grade is as the centre intended.

What may happen to your grade during the centre review and awarding organisation appeals process?

If you request a centre review or an awarding organisation appeal there are three possible outcomes:

• Your original grade is lowered, so your final grade will be lower than the original grade you received.

• Your original grade is confirmed, so there is no change to your grade.

• Your original grade is raised, so your final grade will be higher than the original grade you received.

Once a finding has been made you cannot withdraw your request for a centre review or appeal. If your grade has been lowered you will not be able to revert back to the original grade you received on results day.

Step 4: What can I do if I remain concerned my grade is incorrect after receiving the outcome of an awarding organisation appeal?

You can apply for a procedural review to the Exam Procedures Review Service (EPRS) from the relevant regulator if you remain concerned your grade is incorrect. This is the fourth step of the appeals process. There are EPRS processes for Ofqual (England) and Qualification Wales. The regulators will provide further details about the EPRS processes for summer 2021 before results days this summer.

How do I apply to re-sit a subject's exams in the November exam series?

If you wish to re-sit your exams in a given subject in November, you are able to do so. Please note: if a subject does not award grades on examinations solely, there will not be an opportunity to complete any non-exam assessments. You will be awarded a grade in the November exam series on external exam elements only. Art and Photography, which do not have exams normally, will set a task for pupils to complete as part of the November exam series, which will be the sole evidence used to arrive at a candidate's grade.

Please be advised: should you wish to re-sit GCSE English Language or Mathematics, your post-16 provider should be able to offer this for you at their centre, which might be a more convenient option than re-sitting these exams at Woodlands School.
